Months of work, shown in seconds
A gym transformation reel is the payoff for months of early alarms and hard sessions. Done well, the switch from “before” to “after” lands on the beat and stops people mid-scroll. Done badly, with mismatched angles, different lighting and a random song, even real progress looks unconvincing.
The difference is almost always in how you shoot and edit, not in the results themselves.
This guide walks you through shooting before and after clips that actually match, 4 transformation reel formats, and a step-by-step edit in the free VN app using a ready gym VN template.
Before you edit: shoot clips that actually match
The “after” only looks impressive if it’s a fair comparison with the “before”. Match these five things every time you film.
- Same spot. Mark the floor with tape where you stand, and the place your phone sits.
- Same angle and height. Use a tripod or phone stand at the same height. Front, side and back views are the standard set.
- Same lighting. Film at the same time of day, in the same light. Daylight by a window is the most honest.
- Same outfit. Wear the same or similar clothes so the change is in you, not the clothes.
- Same pose or movement. Repeat one simple pose, a slow turn or the same exercise in every clip.
Don’t have a proper “before” clip? Use your oldest gym photo or video, and match the angle as closely as you can for the “after”.
4 transformation reel formats
1. The beat-drop reveal
The classic. Show the “before” for a few seconds, then switch to the “after” exactly on the beat drop. Simple, dramatic and the easiest to edit. Big Dawgs (466 uses) or Denial (375 uses) give you a strong drop to cut on.
2. Side by side
Before on one side, after on the other, both on screen at the same time. Great for showing posture and shape changes clearly. Shoot both clips in the same pose so they line up.
3. The timeline reel
Month 1, month 2, month 3 and so on, one short clip each with the label on screen. It shows the journey, not just the end point, and feels more honest. Severance (284 uses) suits a step-by-step progression.
4. The strength progress reel
Instead of (or as well as) body shots, compare the same lift: the weight you started with versus what you lift now, the push-ups you could do then versus now. It’s a great option if you’d rather not post physique shots. Try Can You Do It (266 uses).
How to edit your transformation reel in VN, step by step
- Pick a gym template. Choose one from the table below or browse the gym collection. Pick one with a clear beat drop for a reveal.
- Get the QR code. It appears instantly on the thank-you page and in your VN Codes account. Free templates download straight away.
- Scan it in the VN app. VN is free on Android and iPhone. The project opens with music, transitions and text already timed.
- Find the drop. Play the template once and note the slot that lands on the beat drop. That’s where your “after” goes.
- Place your “before” clips first. Fill the slots before the drop with your starting photos or videos, in order.
- Put your best “after” on the drop. Use your strongest, best-lit clip from the same angle as the “before”.
- Trim and line up. Trim the clips so your position matches across the cut. The closer the match, the cleaner the switch looks.
- Add the labels. Edit the template text to “Before” and “After”, or the dates, such as “Jan 2026” and “Oct 2026”.
- Preview and export in full HD. Watch it end to end, fix any clip that starts late, and export in vertical 9:16.
For side-by-side reels, add your “after” clip as an overlay (picture-in-picture) on top of the “before” and resize both to fill half the screen. New to VN? Read our guide on how to use VN templates and QR codes.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Different lighting in before and after. Harsh lights in one clip and soft light in the other makes the comparison look fake. Match the light.
- Changing the angle. A lower or closer camera in the “after” exaggerates the change. Keep the same height and distance.
- Heavy filters. Strong filters or body-editing effects take away from real progress. A light colour grade on both clips is enough.
- Cutting off the beat. If the switch to “after” misses the drop, the reveal falls flat. Line it up exactly.
- Too long a “before”. Keep the build-up short. Viewers want to see the change.
- Filming other people at the gym. Keep other members out of frame and follow your gym’s camera rules.
Transformation reels are about your own progress. Show strength, energy and habits too, not only how you look.
FAQ
1.How do I make a before and after gym reel in VN?
Pick a gym template, scan its QR code in VN, put your “before” clips in the slots before the beat drop and your best “after” clip on the drop. Then add labels and export.
2. Can I use photos instead of videos?
Yes. VN templates accept photos too, so old gym photos work well as your “before”.
3. How long should a transformation reel be?
Around 10 to 20 seconds for a simple reveal, and up to 30 seconds for a month-by-month timeline.
4. Is there a free template for a transformation reel?
Yes. The Triple OG gym template is free and has been used 22.1k times.
5. I don’t want to show my body. Can I still make a transformation reel?
Yes. Make a strength progress reel instead: compare the same lift, rep count or run time from when you started to now.
